Why the Media Will Declare Kerry a Winner Tonight Regardless…
First and foremost, the media has a vested interest in a close Presidential race. The tighter the race, the more people watch… the more people watch, the more advertising revenue the media generates. So don’t go expecting anything remotely close to a declaration of “Bush held his own” or “Bush won” tonight, because it won’t happen.
Instead, the media elites will tell us Kerry did better than expected or that he ‘took on’ Bush for the first time, blah, blah, blah, blah….
Kevin Patrick over at BlogsForBush.com has 4 points to look for post-debate:
Short of something catastrophic either way, the media will all read from the same talking points that say:
John Kerry has found his voice and has lit a fire in his campaign He was Presidential gave the American public a clear option in this election The Bush campaign has to be worried because they have enjoyed great success the last 2 months beating John Kerry down without giving the public a good reason to vote for Bush. Now they must make that argument. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a horserace on our hands.
Glenn Reynolds has also touched on this.
Folks, this can’t be an easy race, no matter what the Bush lead is. Blowouts simply don’t sell tickets. Media is no longer about journalism, it’s about business… and business is about money.
We’re just watching one year long commercial for the networks. They’ve got to tell us it’s interesting or we’ll flip the channel.
