Apparently learning absolutely nothing from history, John Kerry’s position on Iran’s nuclear desires is to follow in the footsteps of a failed Democrat policy. John Kerry’s campaign wesbite says:
It is critical that we work with our allies to resolve these issues and lead a global effort to prevent Iran from obtaining the technology necessary to build nuclear weapons. Iran claims that its nuclear program is only to meet its domestic energy needs. John Kerry’s proposal would call their bluff by organizing a group of states to offer Iran the nuclear fuel they need for peaceful purposes and take back the spent fuel so they cannot divert it to build a weapon.
As laughable as that sounds, John Kerry would offer Iran nuclear fuel to “call their bluff”. If this crazy plan sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s the same thing Clinton tried with North Korea in 1994. Under the “Framework Agreement“, the U.S. would provide North Korea with light water reactors and nuclear fuel in exchange for a promise not to build nuclear weapons.
In the Presidential debate this week, we heard John Kerry tell us how well that 1994 Framework Agreement worked out:
“And meanwhile, North Korea has got nuclear weapons.”
…
“North Korea’s gotten nuclear weapons and the world is more dangerous.”
…
“Iran and North Korea are now more dangerous.”
…
“What I worry about with the president is that he’s not acknowledging what’s on the ground, he’s not acknowledging the realities of North Korea”
…
“North Korea has got more weapons”
John Kerry thinks North Korea is more dangerous now because it claims to have nuclear weapons. (The ironic thing is he bashes Bush for unilateralism, yet with North Korea he wants to ignore the 4 other countries negotiating with NK and go it alone) So much for Clinton’s 1994 Framework Agreement and Kim Jong Il’s promise not to build nukes, huh? At least Kerry sees North Korea as a huge problem now.
So we’re facing with Iran in 2004 what we faced with North Korea in 1994. How does John Kerry want to handle this “do over” event?
He made it clear in the debate, and on his campaign website, he’d handle Iran exactly the same way North Korea was originally handled. Brilliant.
Let’s just compare the Kerry Iran proposal with the failed 1994 North Korea Framework Agreement:
Kerry’s plan - John Kerry’s proposal would call their bluff by organizing a group of states to offer Iran the nuclear fuel they need for peaceful purposes and take back the spent fuel so they cannot divert it to build a weapon.
1994 Framework Agreement - The U.S. will organize under its leadership an international consortium to finance and supply the LWR project to be provided to the DPRK… Upon receipt of U.S. assurances for the provision of LWR’s and for arrangements for interim energy alternatives… The DPRK will forego reprocessing, and instead will safely store and eventually ship the spent fuel out the country.
They are identical. And knowing now that North Korea used the protection of the agreement it never intended to abide by, to secretly build nuclear weapons, John Kerry wants to provide the exact same agreement to Iran, even though he, himself says, “Iran is moving toward weapons.”
John Kerry claims Bush is “not acknowledging the realities of North Korea.”
It’s certainly obvious John Kerry isn’t.
