Barack Obama sent out a letter this week raising money for Robert Byrd (Hat tip: Matt). Normally it wouldn’t seem weird seeing one Democrat on the campaign trail for another. But this time it’s odd.
The ironic thing is that if Robert Byrd had gotten his way years ago, not only would Barack Obama not be serving in the Senate… he wouldn’t be voting or allowed to drink from the same water fountain as Byrd.
This is the man who the young, energetic, black Barack Obama is endorsing:
Robert Byrd was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and not just your everyday run-of-the-mill member, he was a “Kleagle”, a recruiter for the KKK
Robert Byrd wrote a letter in 1946 that: “The Ku Klux Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth in West Virginia”
Robert Byrd casually used the phrase “white nigger” twice on national TV in 2001
Robert Byrd filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act (sponsored by evil Republicans) for more than 14 hours
Robert Byrd opposed the nominations of the Supreme Court’s two black justices, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas
…and the man Barack Obama is now raising money for “vowed never to fight “with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”
Obama told The Charleston Gazette on Wednesday, “Sen. Byrd has spent his career in the Senate tanding up for the Constitution and putting principle over politics. The people of West Virginia are lucky to have such a distinguished and powerful advocate fighting for them who consistently delivers results.
