While the Senators are patting themselves on the back for taking “extraordinary” measures to prevent “the showdown”, I can’t help but wonder what other professions allow an employee to shirk his duty only to be praised when he finally decides to do the tasks for which he was hired.
I think it’s outrageous to give the Democrat obstructionists kudos for giving up their temper tantrum and finally getting back to their elected-duties. It goes to show this filibuster mess was all a big joke anyway, because if the Democrats truly believed in their hearts that Owens, Brown and Pryor were unfit to be judges, they would’ve fought it until the end. But now the Democrats are admitting that they’re not bad enough to fight to the end to prevent confirmation.
In the end, Democrats retain their right to be obstructionists again when Bush nominates someone for the Supreme Court and Republicans maintain their threat of ending judicial filibusters. Nothing’s changed except Democrats have stop their whining for the moment and the Senators are getting back to casting votes…
Nothing extraordinary there. Instead of “congratulations” we ought to be saying “it’s about damn time.”
