George Clooney is apparently not the only liberal proud to be out of touch with reality. Compare the headlines on Democrats.org with the real world:

The real world:  Best job market in 5 years for grads

U.S. college graduates are facing the best job market since 2001, with business, computer, engineering, education and health care grads in highest demand, a report by an employment consulting firm showed on Monday.

“We are approaching full employment and some employers are already dreaming up perks to attract the best talent,” said John Challenger, chief executive of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The survey also found higher starting salaries this year

I don’t blame Democrats for being so frustrated.  They don’t control any branch of the federal government and despite one of the worst terrorist attacks on our soil, two wars and an endless political offensive against those in power, things just keep moving along just fine.  Remember the Democrat mantra during the 2004 campaign comparing Bush to Hoover on the job front.

John Kerry attacked President Bush’s record on the economy Wednesday, saying that middle-class Americans are suffering from poor choices made by a stubborn incumbent who “has created more excuses than jobs.” …

Bush talks about an “ownership society,” Kerry said. “Well, Mr. President, when it comes to your record, we agree: You own it.” …

“George Bush accomplished all this in only four years,” Kerry said. “Imagine what he could do in another four years.”

Well, Mr. Kerry, it’s looking good so far.

Of course, they knew this all along, which is why they wanted to beat Republicans in 2004.  They knew the Republican-controlled government was successful, but they wanted to step in and claim credit.

Imagine. reality.

Perfect Timing
March 19th, 2006 12:37 am

As tens of liberals around the world gathered this weekend to protest the Iraq war, more documents continue to be released to the public indicating Iraq’s pre-war ties to terrorist groups, including al-Qaida.

SADDAM HUSSEIN’S REGIME PROVIDED FINANCIAL support to Abu Sayyaf, the al Qaeda-linked jihadist group founded by Osama bin Laden’s brother-in-law in the Philippines in the late 1990s, according to documents captured in postwar Iraq. An eight-page fax dated June 6, 2001, and sent from the Iraqi ambassador in Manila to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad, provides an update on Abu Sayyaf kidnappings and indicates that the Iraqi regime was providing the group with money to purchase weapons.

These documents add to the growing body of evidence confirming the Iraqi regime’s longtime support for terrorism abroad. The first of them, a series of memos from the spring of 2001, shows that the Iraqi Intelligence Service funded Abu Sayyaf, despite the reservations of some IIS officials. The second, an internal Iraqi Intelligence memo on the relationships between the IIS and Saudi opposition groups, records that Osama bin Laden requested Iraqi cooperation on terrorism and propaganda and that in January 1997 the Iraqi regime was eager to continue its relationship with bin Laden. The third, a September 15, 2001, report from an Iraqi Intelligence source in Afghanistan, contains speculation about the relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda and the likely U.S. response to it.

But hey, it’s really about oil… or somethin’.

The Saddam Papers - 1st Release
March 15th, 2006 3:10 am

Just last Friday I posted about President Bush’s desire to have the “Pentagon Papers” released to the public. I asked why they weren’t being made public.

Now the first of millions of documents have been made public through the Army’s website. One example is Document #: ISGZ-2004-019920

2002 Iraqi Intelligence Correspondence concerning the presence of al-Qaida Members in Iraq. Correspondence between IRS members on a suspicion, later confirmed, of the presence of an Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Moreover, it includes photos and names.

In fact, if you look at page 5 of that document, you’ll see a familiar photo… that of al-Qaida in Iraq terror leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Now remember, this document is dated before the war began.

Now think back to Colin Powell’s speech before the U.N. in February, 2003:

But what I want to bring to your attention today is the potentially much more sinister nexus between Iraq and the Al Qaida terrorist network, a nexus that combines classic terrorist organizations and modern methods of murder. Iraq today harbors a deadly terrorist network headed by Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, an associated in collaborator of Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaida lieutenants…

The network is teaching its operatives how to produce ricin and other poisons. Let me remind you how ricin works. Less than a pinch–image a pinch of salt–less than a pinch of ricin, eating just this amount in your food, would cause shock followed by circulatory failure. Death comes within 72 hours and there is no antidote, there is no cure. It is fatal.

And speaking of “ricin and other poisons”… another document, entitled “Usage of Special Equipment” details Iraq’s plans, back in the late 1980s, to attack parts of Iran using chemical weapons (identified throughout the document as “Special Equipment”), including Ricin, Sarin and Mustard Gas. From the translated version:

4. The above mentioned targets, in paragraphs(A-B)under item 3, are important bases for Iran’s agents and members of Iranian enemies, are far away (as targets for special equipment)from our units. They are considered more appropriate than others to strike with our equipment for being located in low regions which helps the chemical fumes to settle. We can also treat them with available ways (air force, tubular bombers, Samtiyyat (Helicopters) and at night

5. Our directorate suggested striking both targets, referred to in item 3, during this period using two thirds of available special equipment (Ricin) plus one third of available special equipment (Mustard Gas) and keeping the balance for emergency situations that might arise in the operation theater.

Other documents reveal Saddam’s regime’s interest in French elections as well as instructions from the Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS) addressing procedures surrounding U.N. inspections. Still another document discusses the prospect of Iraqis traveling to Afghanistan in 2002 to fight alongside the Mujahadeen against the U.S.-led forces.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

UPDATE: The blogswarm has begun on these documents and bloggers are translating them faster than the U.S. government. Freeper jveritas has the translation of document #: CMPC-2003-001488 that, if the translation is accurate, appears to link Iraq and Osama bin Laden:

In the Name of God the Merciful

Presidency of the Republic

Intelligence Apparatus

To the respectful Mr. M.A.M

Subject: Information

Our source in Afghanistan No 11002 (for information about him see attachment 1) provided us with information that that Afghani Consul Ahmad Dahestani (for information about him see attachment 2) told him the following:

2. That America has proof that the government of Iraq and Osama Bin Laden group have shown cooperation to hit target within America.

3. That in case it is proven the involvement of Osama Bin Laden group and the Taliban in these destructive operations it is possible that American will conduct strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

4. That the Afghani Consul heard about the subject of Iraq relation with Osama Bin Laden group during his stay in Iran.

5. In light of this we suggest to write to the Commission of the above information.

Please view… Yours… With regards

Socialists Unveil Their Plan
March 15th, 2006 2:38 am

No wonder they’ve tried to keep it hidden for so long. Nancy “Ethics Rules Are For Others” Pelosi has given a preview of their plan which is simply a combination of going after the President via censure or impeachment and a heavy dose of socialism. And every step of the way, she panders to the traditional Democrat base.

Step 1: Pander to the Unions

In a speech to the Communications Workers of America on Tuesday, Pelosi mentioned Democrats’ opposition to outsourcing. She said Democrats will end tax subsidies for companies that send jobs overseas.

Of course, they don’t have a plan ready to deal with higher priced goods stemming from increased overhead. If it’s truly a case of employing foreigners at a detriment to American workers, will they also end the H1-B visa program that allows foreigners to come to America and take jobs from Americans as well?

She also said Democrats support the “right of all Americans to organize,” a sentiment that goes over well with labor unions such as the CWA.

To protect workers who want to join unions, Pelosi said Democrats are “fighting” to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, sponsored by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) in the House and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) in the Senate. “The bill will guarantee that when a majority of workers in a company want a union, they will get a union,” Pelosi said.

Of course, “protecting workers who want to join unions” is code for shoring up Democrat votes. Because when it comes to protecting workers who don’t want to join the Democrat-supporting unions, these same “champions o’ poor, oppressed workers” are quick to side with Big Labor by supporting compulsory dues which finance unions’ political activism.

Step 2: A Little Dose of Socialism

Democrats also support an increase in the minimum wage. Pelosi, describing the income of corporate American CEOs as “immoral,” used Wal-Mart to make her point:

“I was told that an entry level person at Wal-Mart, who works his or her entire career at Wal-Mart, would make as much as the CEO makes in two weeks. A lifetime of work versus two weeks in the executive suite — this is not America, this is not fairness, this is not the basis of a strong middle class that is essential for our democracy. We must change that in our country,” she said.

Sure, if that person was mediocre enough to not get promoted. The problem with Pelosi’s use of Wal-Mart as an example is the fact that most of Wal-Mart’s management team started in jobs on the ground floor at Wal-Mart. A specific example is Lance de la Rosa, who joined Wal-Mart 18 years ago on the ground floor and now “coordinates operations for 1,100 Wal-Mart stores in the southeast and midwest, moving millions of pieces of merchandise and tending to the big and little details that help make Wal-Mart stores work in your community.” In fact, in 2004 alone, 9,000 hourly associates moved into management jobs.

Maybe Pelosi ought to be asking what’s wrong with a person that spends their entire life at the bottom and never advances. It may be a lack of ability or desire. Neither of which can be cured by forcing the employer to pay them more for the same work.

But if Pelosi wants to make such a disingenuous comparison, maybe we could do the same for members of Congress. Current minimum wage is $5.15 per hour. Based on 40 hours/week, 4 weeks/month, 12 months/year, that works out to an annual salary of $9,888. Pelosi’s current salary as House Minority Leader is $183,500. That means that the same poor, minimum wage-earning, Wal-Mart worker makes as much in a year as Pelosi does in just under 3 weeks. At what point will she start using her own career as a political pandering anecdote?

Step 3: Present Republican Proposals as Your Own

Pelosi also mentioned the Democrats’ “Innovation Agenda” to maintain America’s leadership role in the global economy.

America lags behind other countries that have universal broadband deployment, Pelosi said; but the Democrats’ agenda “guarantees” that every American will have affordable access to broadband within five years.

Hmmm… universal broadband in America by 2011? Sounds familiar. Just this month, the House Republican High-Tech Working Group launched the “Innovation and Competitiveness Agenda” which “emphasizes research and development, a commitment to science, and making the U.S. tax, regulatory and legal environments more attractive for innovation, can help the U.S. high-tech industry compete in the 21st century.” In addition, the Bush administration’s goal is to have universal high-speed Internet access by 2007.

Maybe we’re seeing the Democrats trying to return to the Clinton-era strategy of co-opting Republican ideas to be successful. I guess that would at least qualify as a plan.

Step 4: Down With “Big Oil” and a little more Socialism

Democrats support “energy independence” within ten years;

They claim to support energy independence, but consistently reject efforts to actually do it.

health care for all American within five years;

Remember the last time socialist health care was proposed?

and “dignified retirement” (no privatization of Social Security) through an “AmeriSave” plan.

Meaning they will continue to force workers to contribute to the Government’s Ponzi Scheme so they can continue to use it for vote-buying promises while allowing those who don’t already contribute to 401(k) accounts to not put even more into such accounts.

Step 5: Don’t Forget the Talking Points

Pelosi also tosses in the “culture of corruption” line… a culture with which she is intimately familiar.

“Democrats stand for “real security,” Pelosi said, including port security. “We must have 100 percent screening of our containers that come into our ports,” she said.

Does that include the Long Beach, California port leased under the Clinton administration to COSCO, a company owned by the Chinese government’s Ministry of Communications? Or the Indianapolis airport, whose security has been managed by a British company since 1995? Or how about JFK airport, where a UAE company runs a cargo terminal?

But under the surface of this so-called “plan”, Democrats are really focused on paying Bush back for the embarrassment of their hero’s impeachment. And they have to regain a majority in the House this Fall to launch their payback agenda. Fortunately for the rest of us, the Democrats haven’t learned that socialism won’t fly here.

Null & Void
March 14th, 2006 3:52 pm
That’s what the Third Court of Appeals declared Ronnie Earle’s subpoenas.

“The point here is Ronnie Earle is abusing his office … to have a court declare that Ronnie Earle was abusing his office, and that is in effect what the Third Court said,” [Delay lawyer] Hennessy said.

The same court has set oral arguments on the State’s Appeal (of Judge Pat Priest’s dismissal of all or part of the three politically-motivated indictments) at 1:30 PM on March 22, 2006.

Myths of Iraq
March 14th, 2006 3:17 pm
Newly re-designed Real Clear Politics has an interesting article up from Ralph Peters about the real Iraq that MSM doesn’t want you to see. A couple of myths…

Hatred of the U.S. military. If anything surprised me in the streets of Baghdad, it was the surge in the popularity of U.S. troops among both Shias and Sunnis. In one slum, amid friendly adult waves, children and teenagers cheered a U.S. Army patrol as we passed. Instead of being viewed as occupiers, we’re increasingly seen as impartial and well-intentioned.

The failure of the Iraqi army. Instead, the past month saw a major milestone in the maturation of Iraq’s military. During the mini-crisis that followed the Samarra bombing, the Iraqi army put over 100,000 soldiers into the country’s streets. They defused budding confrontations and calmed the situation without killing a single civilian. And Iraqis were proud to have their own army protecting them. The Iraqi army’s morale soared as a result of its success.

Read the whole thing.
