Maryland Democrats, fearful that a *gasp* black Republican might attract black voters, are pulling out all stops on their shameless campaign against the candidate. According to the Washington Post:

An internal document prepared by a top Democratic strategist warns that a majority of African American voters in Maryland are open to supporting Republican Senate candidate Michael S. Steele and advises the party not to wait to “knock Steele down.”

The 37-page report says a sizable segment of likely black voters — as much as 44 percent — would readily abandon their historic Democratic allegiances “after hearing Steele’s messaging.”

The “Research findings summary” of the Democrat report says that Governor Ehrlich and Michael Steele have a “clear ability to break through the Democratic stronghold among African American voters in Maryland” and Steele’s “messaging to the African American community has clearly had a positive affect…”

Democrats can’t tolerate a candidate with a positive message. Especially if that person threatens their cherished “black vote”. The document claims that Steele “is a unique challenge”. It’s unique to Democrats because they don’t understand how to campaign on an actual message… to them, campaigns are about trying to dig up dirt on the opponent, trashing the opposition personally and being against any actual proposals the other side offers up.

The document goes on to say that “Democrats can not afford to wait until after the primary election to “knock Steele down” and that a “persuasion campaign” should be launched immediately to “discredit Steele as a viable candidate for the community”.

At what point will Democrats learn that voters are tired of their politics of personal destruction? Will they ever realize that voters are turned off by candidates and parties that offer no vision of their own, but simply run campaigns based on “not being the other guy”?

Finally, the summary concludes with this little nugget:

Connecting Steele to National Republicans, especially on issues such as Medicare reform and Social Security privatization, can turn Steele into a typical Republican in the eyes of voters, as opposed to an African American candidate.”

Why didn’t they say “turn Steele into a typical Republican as opposed to a Democrat candidate”? Everywhere we turn these days, Democrats are playing the race card while simultaneously accusing everyone else of being racist.

Perhaps that’s why the Democrats in Maryland are finding themselves in this hole to begin with. Keep up the great work guys.
