Dude, Where’s My Plagiarism?
November 16th, 2006 11:06 am

A liberal blogger posted an “open letter to conservatives” back on November 9th and then magically, a “pledge to disheartened conservatives” appeared on Michael Moore’s site on November 14th… signed by Moore, himself. Not so much as a credit or hyperlink to the original author.

There’s a thread on DU that does a side by side comparison of the two:

Moore: A Liberal’s Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives
Me: Dear dismayed conservatives:

Moore: I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:
Me: I hereby make these promises to you.

Moore: Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.
Me: We will protect your lives and livelihoods.

Moore: We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs.
Me: We will listen to and respect your beliefs.

Moore: We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don’t put those beliefs into practice. // We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be “different” or “immoral.”
Me: We will never try to force you to change your religion, sexual orientation, or first language.

Moore: We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.
Me: We will do our best to reduce the number of abortions in our country.

Moore: We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich.
Me: We will have no tolerance for corruption and cronyism, even in our own party.

Moore: And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST.
Me: ESPECIALLY in our own party.

Moore:We will never, ever, call you “unpatriotic” simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.
Me: We will never tell you that you are unpatriotic. We will never tell you that your opinion doesn’t count.

Moore: When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.
Me: We will never waste your lives for power.

Moore: We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people.
Me: We will hold our leaders to a high ethical standard and when they succumb to lust for power, WE WILL HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.

Moore: If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it.
Me: If we forget this, please, please, please, remind us.

Moore: You are every bit as American as we are.
Me: We need you to do this. You are America as much as we are. Let’s go.

Why does this come as any surprise? It’s not like Michael Moore has had an original thought since the last time he was able to see his own toes, anyway.

  1. The plagiarism storyline puts the real issue of this overall story in the shadows. The original post was made somewhere like DemUnderground, right? So is the tone of these promises completely sarcastic or was this actually some lib trying to impress that this is how his/her party will rule? Was he/she trying to extend a hand of cooperation and actual respect or was this some lame attempt to passively-aggressively insult conservatives? I guess I am confused…

Michael Moore plagiarizing isn’t the story to me… he’s a choad with absolutely no sincere bone in his body when it comes to conservatives and specifically republicans. The thing is… his lackies at DU and Kos et al are really no different than he is. “Hate” seems to reside on their side of the political spectrum much more than on ours. So was this silly “list” of promises actually serious?? Are we to believe that this is how libs think and feel now that they’ve retained some political power in the country again?!? B.S. I don’t buy it. We’ve had 6 years of non-stop irrational and pure hatred from our fellow Americans on the left… they have made every effort to demonize and destroy our political leaders and our ideology… they have worked hand in hand with the American news media to undermine our security efforts (this is fact not conjecture) and destroy our President. They have shown absolutely no pride in their country and all but sabotaged our War on Terror (as if this war is a Republican issue only… the left is very fond of saying “your war” and “your president”). And now they want to make nice and start working on things with us??? What a shameful bunch of people… I have a message for all of you libs who now wish to improve the tone and work with conservatives and be respectful of other opinions and ideology:

First, welcome to the fight. America is at war… or at least there is a powerful force actively engaging in a war with us…conservatives see that and have accepted the sobering responsibility of this fight… they may not be perfect, but at least they are serious about the threat. Your pledges don’t prove to me that you are any more serious about this threat than you were on Nov 6, 2006… which is eerily similar to the mentality you had about Islamofascism on Sept. 10, 2001. Don’t tell me you will protect me. Show me you have the stones to do what is best for your country even if it isn’t what is best for your party’s politics.

I have watched Republicans and conservatives completely savaged by your ilk. It started while the WTC was still smoldering and gained ground as things got tough in this fight. You played political cards that encouraged our enemies, showing you had no concern for your country only your political aspirations. 6 years of this! If winning an election was what was going to get your leaders into the game, then I applaud the results of the Nov 7. We need a united front against this enemy. However, your party and it’s leaders have a lot to prove to me, and, I suspect, many conservatives and liberals alike. Your party, since 1999 has been a cartoon… a collection of characters that are, frankly, hard to believe and/or take seriously.

So now you wish to take things a little more seriously… work with your hated political enemies… “respect” our beliefs, I think is how you say it. Well, forgive me if I take your pledges with a grain of salt. And forgive me if I am terrified for my children because of the cartoon characters from your party who now take over the House and Senate with a perceived “dictate” from the voters.

Since 2000, there has been ONE… count it up… ONE political party or politcal ideology that has taken on the grave issues of our post-9/11 world seriously. And another political movement who has been reprehensible in their behavior during such times. Your pledge, while nice and stunning to read (considering where it comes from) is completely meaningless to me and others who feel similarly. I need to see that you understand what America faces in our enemies before i can take you seriously in the least bit. Cute bumper stickers and protest signs, slogans, and blog entries, etc. aren’t going to protect my children. I hope that with this new responsibility you start to take this world seriously and I hope you take the sobering responsibility of protecting your country as seriously as conservatives do.

Until then, to me, you are no different than you were on Nov 6, 2006 or Sept 10, 2001.

As for Mr. moore, you “progressives” can deal with the plagiarism issue from a lying, anti-American, “documentary” filmmaker.

  2. Excellently stated, JJ. You have succintly stated what most of your conservative brethren perceive pertaining to the Democrats.

I for one, do not think the liberal Democrats will be able to change their stripes - they will continue to shove their liberal elitist/socialist agenda. It’s somewhat conforting to hear Mitch McConnell say that the Democrats will receive the same level of co-operation as the Republicans received in recent years.

I am not an advocate of obstructionist tactics in the legislature - however, I staunchly oppose socialism and anyone who seeks to force socialism upon this great nation. Therefore, if obstructionism is required to stop socialism - them so be it!
