Saddam pretended to be a tough guy when he was defying the world before the coalition invaded. Then he crawled into a rat hole and whimpered like a kicked puppy.
Now he’s telling the world he’s proud to become a martyr… while his legal team is pleading in U.S. courts to spare his life.
Lawyers for Saddam Hussein asked a U.S. judge to block his transfer to the custody of Iraqi officials poised to carry out his execution.
Hussein’s lawyers filed documents Friday afternoon asking for a stay of execution. The 21-page request was filed in U.S. District Court in Washington before Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly.
According to sources, Saddam will be worm food in less than 4 hours. The world will be a better place for it.
UPDATE:
Saddam is dead, dead, dead.
UPDATE 2:
So how do Iraqis feel about this news? Pretty good.
A witness to the execution reported that celebrations broke out after Hussein was dead, and that there was “dancing around the body.”
…and why?
“It’s a very solemn moment for me,” Feisal Istrabadi, Iraq’s U.N. ambassador, said on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.” “I can understand why some of my compatriots may be cheering. I have friends whose particular people I can think of who have lost 10, 15, 20 members of their family, more.
The execution was videotaped.
The execution was videotaped and photographed, state television reported, and those images will be distributed to the media.
So my question is this: Will CNN, the network that proudly promoted a video of terrorist snipers killing American soldiers, show images and video of the death of a murderous tyrant?
Today was a national day of mourning for a fallen former U.S. President. Tomorrow will likely be a day of mourning for many on the Left who think Iraq would be better off if Saddam were still in power.
UPDATE 3:
Right on cue, American liberals are protesting Saddam’s execution.

How pathetic is the justice system that when a man has been convicted in a different country his laywers try to get him off by filling papers in a different country? Damn I hope that judge takes those appeal papers and wipes her ass with them. That is all they are worth. The war in Iraq may have been started with a lie , weapons of mass distruction, but Saddam was an asshole and he needed to be taken out. With his death may your soilders be able to come home for next Christmas.

CBS Refused To Interrupt Rerun Regarding President Ford’s Death (from Chicago Tribune)
CBS DOUBLE STANDARD UPDATE BELOW

I would bet that CNN will NOT show the video of SH hanging. Probably a still photo, or they may show the video to the point where he is about to stretch, but I dont think that they will show him actually die.
Fox news on the other hand I think will show him take the fall. The national network here in Canada I can almost guarentee will not show the video because they would think it was a promotion of the USA somehow.
It may be our national network, but they do not speak for me.

Sic Semper Tyrannis

At last! The tyrant is dead
Saddam has finally been hung, and the authorities in Iraq did the right thing to carry out his execution ASAP.

In reference to your last sentence: the question isn’t whether Iraq is better off than it was before, it is whether the United States is better off now than it was before. These are separate questions, but I understand if your newly discovered bleeding heart identifies Iraqis as just as important as Americans.
You’ve mounted the soapbox to celebrate the death of a tyrant here. Fine. As for myself, I’ll focus instead on the soldiers who died this month in Iraq, 109 thus far. Chickenhawks like yourself may be willing to throw them under the bus for your own vain grandstanding, but I won’t.

Wow, if this was the punishment for a guy charged with a few hundred deaths, I wonder what would happen to someone that killed 3,000 of his fellow citizens and 655,000 of another country? Just wondering.

“You’ve mounted the soapbox to celebrate the death of a tyrant here. Fine. As for myself, I’ll focus instead on the soldiers who died this month in Iraq, 109 thus far.
Interesting that you’d compare my reaction to the death of a dictator to your reaction to the death of American soldiers… I guess it’s a fair comparison, since I am taking joy in Saddam’s death.
“Chickenhawks like yourself may be willing to throw them under the bus for your own vain grandstanding, but I won’t.”
No, you’d tie them to the back of the bus and drag them behind on your way to the next anti-troop rally.
Comment by Texas Rainmaker — 8:27 pm
I’m not comparing our reactions- I’m noticing your deliberate avoidance of the cost of Saddam’s removal. You avoid this cost in human lives because these are lost lives that could be saved if chicken hawks like yourself stepped up and served.
It’s time to stop fooling around with these games. Adding 30.000-50,000 will do nothing to effect the situation. What we need is to either leave completely, which I support, or man up and put in 200,000-300,000 troops and stay for 5-10 more years.
The problem with the more troops option is that chickenhawks like yourself, and the others that frequent these boards, are unwilling to put your own lives on the line. You are cowards who are content to watch our under-manned army valiantly battle for a losing strategy.
Comment by Nate21 — 9:52 pm
Yeah, Nate, that’s the problem. The strongest, most superior military on the planet is only hampered because guys like me aren’t in there. I’m humbled by your confidence in my abilities, but I think I’ll leave the soldiering to those experienced in such.
And I’m sure they must awaken every morning thanking God for people like you who criticize both their actions and those of us who support them unconditionally.
I’ll check with dozen or so folks in my family and the more than 2 dozen of my close friends - all of whom are serving or have served - and see if they prefer “chickenhawks” like me…. or chickenshits like you.
Comment by Texas Rainmaker — 10:14 pm
Yes, our military is hampered because we don’t have enough people to patrol the streets and enforce security. It’s called effective counter-insurgency: look into it sometime.
And though I don’t know you, I’m sure you can at least walk up and down a street and radio in suspicious activity when you see it. But since you seem to be lacking in confidence, maybe they could find you a desk job somewhere.
Go ahead, write that letter to your friends and family serving and tell them that the army doesn’t need any more people in Iraq, that they have enough people to do that job. Tell them to buckle down and get control of the situation, and that you will be taking a glass of champagne and toasting them with your unconditional support from the comfortable confines of Texas.

I’ve been thinking about our exchange here, and I’ve come to the conclusion that we aren’t getting much accomplished. I find myself compelled to call you on what I feel is your unnecessary and mean-spirited treatment of people you disagree with, but in the process I become mean-spirited myself. Therefore, I apologize for the manner in which I’ve engaged in ad hominem attacks. I hope in the New Year those of us who disagree can have a dialogue that is civilized and free of rancor. Best wishes, for you, myself, and everyone involved in the great debate about our nations future.

Yep, you’ve done a bang-up job of showing civility here. I was wondering if you could grace us with another well-thought, brilliant, and original “chickenhawks like yourself” retort? You didn’t parrot that line nearly enough for my liking.
