I hope in the New Year those of us who disagree can have a dialogue that is civilized and free of rancor.

Yep, you've done a bang-up job of showing civility here. I was wondering if you could grace us with another well-thought, brilliant, and original "chickenhawks like yourself" retort? You didn't parrot that line nearly enough for my liking.

I've been thinking about our exchange here, and I've come to the conclusion that we aren't getting much accomplished. I find myself compelled to call you on what I feel is your unnecessary and mean-spirited treatment of people you disagree with, but in the process I become mean-spirited myself. Therefore, I apologize for the manner in which I've engaged in ad hominem attacks. I hope in the New Year those of us who disagree can have a dialogue that is civilized and free of rancor. Best wishes, for you, myself, and everyone involved in the great debate about our nations future.

Yes, our military is hampered because we don't have enough people to patrol the streets and enforce security. It's called effective counter-insurgency: look into it sometime.

And though I don't know you, I'm sure you can at least walk up and down a street and radio in suspicious activity when you see it. But since you seem to be lacking in confidence, maybe they could find you a desk job somewhere.

Go ahead, write that letter to your friends and family serving and tell them that the army doesn't need any more people in Iraq, that they have enough people to do that job. Tell them to buckle down and get control of the situation, and that you will be taking a glass of champagne and toasting them with your unconditional support from the comfortable confines of Texas.

Yeah, Nate, that's the problem. The strongest, most superior military on the planet is only hampered because guys like me aren't in there. I'm humbled by your confidence in my abilities, but I think I'll leave the soldiering to those experienced in such.

And I'm sure they must awaken every morning thanking God for people like you who criticize both their actions and those of us who support them unconditionally.

I'll check with dozen or so folks in my family and the more than 2 dozen of my close friends - all of whom are serving or have served - and see if they prefer "chickenhawks" like me.... or chickenshits like you.

I'm not comparing our reactions- I'm noticing your deliberate avoidance of the cost of Saddam's removal. You avoid this cost in human lives because these are lost lives that could be saved if chicken hawks like yourself stepped up and served.

It's time to stop fooling around with these games. Adding 30.000-50,000 will do nothing to effect the situation. What we need is to either leave completely, which I support, or man up and put in 200,000-300,000 troops and stay for 5-10 more years.

The problem with the more troops option is that chickenhawks like yourself, and the others that frequent these boards, are unwilling to put your own lives on the line. You are cowards who are content to watch our under-manned army valiantly battle for a losing strategy.

"You’ve mounted the soapbox to celebrate the death of a tyrant here. Fine. As for myself, I’ll focus instead on the soldiers who died this month in Iraq, 109 thus far.

Interesting that you'd compare my reaction to the death of a dictator to your reaction to the death of American soldiers... I guess it's a fair comparison, since I am taking joy in Saddam's death.

"Chickenhawks like yourself may be willing to throw them under the bus for your own vain grandstanding, but I won’t."

No, you'd tie them to the back of the bus and drag them behind on your way to the next anti-troop rally.

Wow, if this was the punishment for a guy charged with a few hundred deaths, I wonder what would happen to someone that killed 3,000 of his fellow citizens and 655,000 of another country? Just wondering.

In reference to your last sentence: the question isn't whether Iraq is better off than it was before, it is whether the United States is better off now than it was before. These are separate questions, but I understand if your newly discovered bleeding heart identifies Iraqis as just as important as Americans.
