Texas Rainmaker

Why is it so hard, now that Democrats have taken over Congress, to distinguish between a debate on the House floor and a late night comedy skit?

If you needed something to make you laugh today, check out Barney Frank showing us what it would be like if Elmer Fudd were suddenly elevated to Congress. In this video, the debate is dealing with the controversial stem-cell research bill and Republican Patrick McHenry asks Frank whether America Samoa can be exempted from the legislation (as it was exempted from the minimum wage bill the day before). Frank gets so flustered with McHenry, he starts babbling like Elmer Fudd and demanding that the Republican stop obstructing the work of Congress with parliamentary technicalities. Then Texas Republican Joe Barton jumps in and reminds Frank that this kind of tactic was a favorite of the Democrats when they were the minority party.

You made your bed, Democrats… now lie in it.

Jason, I don’t know that inviting Barney Frank to lie in a bed is a good idea! :-D

  3. Did I hear Mr. Frank correctly? Did he say, in essence, “it doesn’t matter if I did it yesterday, it’s horribly wrong and childish now”?

I mean, I don’t want to run afoul of a tu quoque fallacy here, but if you’re going to claim that a particular course of action is so heinous, perhaps it might be a good idea first to distance yourself from when you did it in the past.

  4. Yes, I believe that’s exactly what you heard. Do as I say, not as I do. Or did. I guess they were before obstructionism before they were against it?

  5. Looking back at my comment, I believe I meant “for obstructionism,” not “before.” That’s what happens when you try to be witty at 4am.
