Liberals’ Selective Outrage
March 4th, 2007 8:45 am

By now you’ve probably heard about Ann Coulter’s dumb comments at CPAC. In less than 24 hours, it’s already become a fundraising tool for the Left. HuffingtonPost is promoting the fundraising letter. And a search of DemocraticUnderground shows no less than 5 discussion threads dedicated to the subject. Even a search of Yahoo News turns up tons of articles about the event. (including articles relating to GOP negative responses to Coulter’s comments)

What she said was stupid. Not only was the joke itself not very funny, but she ought to know something like that will get picked up and beat to death by the Left in their campaign of selective moral outrage. Here’s what she said:

“I would talk about Edwards but I’ve heard that you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot’”

I’ll admit, the comment really was unacceptable, but to see the reaction of the Left, you’d think she just called for the mass extermination of all homosexuals.

But let’s look at the comments of another political commenter… from the other side. Bill Maher, known for his outrageously stupid comments said on his HBO show this week that if Cheney would’ve been assassinated, the world would be a safer place.

“I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn’t be dying needlessly tomorrow.
[…]
I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.”

Now compare the outrage from the Left between Coulter’s dumb joke about John Edwards’ sexuality and Maher’s “fact” that the world would be better off if the assassination against the Vice President had succeeded.

Nothing on DU. I don’t see any Republican candidates using it as a fundraiser. A search of Yahoo News for Bill Maher’s disappointment in the failed assassination of VP Cheney reveals a total of zero articles… and certainly no articles involving a liberal denouncing his comments. But then there’s HuffingtonPost. Not only is there not an article about Maher’s outrageous comments, but Maher actually has a featured post attacking Cheney’s son-in-law.

So they come unglued about Coulter’s comments, yet turn around and celebrate a man who thinks the assassination of the Vice President would be a good thing.

Selective… and disgusting.
