The Senate Democrats (and a couple of antiwar Republicans) voted today to “tie the hands of the Commander-in-Chief by imposing an arbitrary timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, thereby undermining the position of American Armed Forces and jeopardizing the successful conclusion of Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

This is what could be heard in chambers after the vote:

They’ll probably follow today’s vote up with another bill to redesign Old Glory… by removing the red and blue.

UPDATE:
So Democrats support an arbitrary timetable for withdrawal of our troops? Interesting, considering this is what some of these same Democrats had to say about such arbitrary timetables not so long ago (hat tip: RedState and GatewayPundit):

Senator Jim Webb in September, 2006:

Anyone who tells you we can set a timetable for withdrawal doesn’t understand war. And anyone who says that nothing can be done to speed a secure peace doesn’t understand America.”

Webb voted today to support the troop withdrawal timetable in the bill.

Senator Ben Nelson on March 8, 2007:

Nelson said while he doesn’t back President Bush’s troop surge or having “U.S. troops in the cross hairs of a civil war,” he also doesn’t believe Congress should put a timetable on troop withdrawal.

Nelson voted today to support the troop withdrawal timetable in the bill.

Senator Evan Bayh on March 12, 2007:

“I, for example, am not in support of circling a date on a calendar and saying, ‘no matter what, we’re out on that date.’ ”

Bayh voted today to support the troop withdrawal timetable in the bill.

Senator Harry Reid in 2005:

“As far as setting a timeline … That’s not a wise decision, because it only empowers those who don’t want us there.”

Reid voted today to support the troop withdrawal timetable in the bill.

Senator Hillary Clinton in 2005:

I don’t believe it’s smart to set a date for withdrawal. I don’t think you should ever telegraph your intentions to the enemy so they can await you.”

Clinton voted today to support the troop withdrawal timetable in the bill.

Senator Joe Biden in 2005

“A deadline for pulling out … will only encourage our enemies to wait us out” … it would be “a Lebanon in 1985. And God knows where it goes from there.”

Biden voted today to support the troop withdrawal timetable in the bill.

  1. Senate Passes Iraq Timeline

Well, I’m officially disgusted:Defying a veto threat, the Democratic-controlled Senate narrowly signaled support Tuesday for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by next March. Republican attempts to scuttle the non-binding timeline failed o…

  2. So just out of curiositys sake, what is the date that theyy have now circled on te calender? And if they have indeed circled a date and it goes through I think that they had best make sure that everyone is out at least a month ahead of that. The simple reason being that the last month and days thatt he boys are over there trying to do their job the bad guys are going to be stepping up their attacks to make sure they kill as many as they can before they are all gone.

  3. Disgusting, both in their cowardice and duplicity.

All who voted in favor of this timetable should be tried for treason due to their attempts to undermine American forces and give victory to our enemies.
