From WaPo:

Mohamad al-Janabi, a reputed al-Qaeda member in the nearby city of Salman Pak, said in a telephone interview that he was unable to contact his comrades in Mahmudiyah to determine whether they were responsible for the attack.

But he added: “I can assure you that we will start pressuring Bush in a new way at the same time he is facing pressures from the Democrats and the American people. And there will be no problem to sacrifice 10 soldiers in order to abduct a single American soldier and get him on television screens begging for us to release him.”

Uniting, not dividing.

  1. I’m so fed up with these evil muslims I could spit. (And I’m a chick.) When are we going to get our heads out of the sand and do something serious? I say we start with a raid of Dearbornistan and Detroit, MI.

And then try to pound some sense into the liberal morons who support them.

  2. Why single out the Democrats? He also says that the American people are putting pressure on Bush. So every American that’s no longer gung ho on the war is an Al-Qaeda ally according to this guy, TR. That would be about 66% of us, see http://pollingreport.com/iraq.htm. Hm, looks like we’ll need to increase Gitmo’s capacity.

  3. Well, the first step is admitting your problem. Good job, endo, now you can proceed to step 2, recognizing you need help.

  4. Al Qaeda has been banking on a lack of intestinal fortitude of the left and the MSM (pardon the redundancy), and thanks to bleating from both, the lack of will to finish the job has unfortunately permeated to the American public…which is just how AQ planned it.

So congrats, leftards…AQ’s plan has worked. That’s good news for the left, but bad news for America (which, of course, is also good news for the left).

What I’d like to see is just how sure of themselves Dems are. If, as endo maintains, the public disapproves of the war, then let’s see the left’s “leadership” (and I use that term loosely) propose getting out right now. After all, if the public genuinely believes that, then what’s the harm, right?

  6. Ok - let me get this straight. The right sanctions torture as a legitmate fact finding tool (apparently because you just can’t trust an Al Qaeda memeber to tell you the truth unless your threatening a few of their family members with rape or death) - but you immediately take them on their word when it so conveniently fits your understanding of the world. Which is it? Can we trust Al Qaeda to tell us what it really thinks - and what it is really up to? Or can’t we?

  7. Can we trust Al Qaeda to tell us what it really thinks - and what it is really up to? Or can’t we?

Look at the motives behind the information conveyed. When the enemy is conveying something potentially helpful to us, of course we’ll evaluate the information with some skepticism.

But when they’re touting their campaign to kill us all, we can be pretty sure they mean it.

  8. I’m glad your so confidant you can tell the difference, Tex.

Comment by djernigan — 11:00 am

  9. djernigan: Are you really incapable of distinguishing a captured combatant revealing information that could result in his comrades being killed, weapons caches being discovered, or the location of Al Qaeda leadership from a relatively protected AQ member conveying threats to our troops? People are not generally inclined to threaten American troops unless they really mean it.

  10. PR campaigns with absolutely no basis in reality are part and parcel of military conflict, or have you already forgotten about Baghdad Bob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed_Saeed_al-Sahaf).

However, what I find really shocking is that none of you take issue with my claim that The right sanctions torture as a legitmate fact finding tool. Nope - nothing wrong with those rape rooms, as long as it’s our side who is putting them to use. So then what do you think of General Petraeus’s recent letter to the troops against torture? (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/nation/documents/petraeus_values_051007.pdf) He must be a bleeding heart liberal.

  11. Sometimes your absurdities just don’t justify a response. You keep setting up strawmen so you can knock them down and pat yourself on the back for being such an intellectual genius.

So tell me, Daniel, how long have you been beating your wife?

Comment by Texas Rainmaker — 6:31 am

  12. This - from the king of strawmen? I mean - please - what are you even talking about?

Comment by djernigan — 7:44 am

  13. Geez, Tex. Do you even know what a strawman argument is. Over and over and over - you accused me in a previous discussion of holding the completely untenable position that there was absolutley no upward mobility - so you could counter it with a single example (that was some real intellectual maneuvering there, let me tell you). Except that I did not hold this untenable position. So no, Tex - the Strawman is YOUR modus operandi.

Moreover, my first and primary response - that Baghdad Bob is a PR man who lied through his teeth even as he promised death to U.S. soldiers - is a perfectly coherent response to the issue at hand.

The second response - while rather glib in how it attempts to call the right to task for only recognizing those truths which fit its needs - contains no element of a strawman argument. I am not attributing anything to you - just trying to get a response from you.

With your “when did you stop beating your wife” quote - you are actually referencing the loaded question” fallacy (http://www.fallacyfiles.org/loadques.html). And here I thought you went to law school Tex.

And so yes - maybe it is a bit of a “loaded question” - but unlike the “when did you quit beating your wife” type of question - you are only forced into a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” scenario - if, somehow, rejecting torture is inherently damning. Well, Tex. Is it? The fact that you think it is somehow a loaded question is pretty telling in and of itself. Not that I can expect you to follow this complicated bit of reasoning, what with your cracker jacks box law degree.

Comment by djernigan — 8:11 am

  14. It’s kinda fun to watch you get all worked up over nothing. It reminds me of my dog that suddenly notices his tail, then chases it for hours.

As to your “question” - no, I do not condone rape rooms. Does that satisfy your tail wagging?

As for your claim that I set up a strawman on the upward mobility issue, it’s obvious you don’t understand the concept of strawman. I said that it was possible for people to go from nothing to wealthy and successful, and used my own example as just one bit of proof… I realize this is probably what makes you envious enough of my law degree to constantly try and put it down. Hey, work hard and someday you might be successful. Until then, just stay addicted to my successful blog and keep coming back for more treats.

    Sit. Roll over. Good boy.

Comment by Texas Rainmaker — 8:19 am

  15. Huff, huff, puff, puff. I’m not the one who confused a “strawman argument” for “the loaded question fallacy.”

And - yes - responding to my thinking about upward mobility by citing a single example presupposed that I think upward mobility is impossible. It attributes to me a position I simply do not hold - and one which is, of course, easily refutable - and knocks that argument down - all the while ignoring my real argument (that the odds against upward mobility are so long as to be irrelevant to the issue of what constitutes reasonable taxation) No, Tex - you still haven’t confronted THAT argument - but only the strawman argument you substituted in its place. CLASSIC STRAWMAN rhetorical maneuvering (http://www.fallacyfiles.org/strawman.html).

Worked up over nothing? Perhaps. But even while many on the left subscribe to wishy washy epistemological relativism, I never knew someone who practiced it so well without even knowing it. Is it a strawman? Is it a loaded question? Is it a chicken? Is it a duck? Duh?!? Don’t know. Guess it don’t matter.

Comment by djernigan — 8:41 am

  16. Daniel, do you not even realize I was using the loaded question as the strawman argument? I replaced your retarded supposition with another, similarly retarded position. Now you’ve run off trying to flex your googling muscle and all the while I’m wondering that since you didn’t respond to my question, we must assume you’re currently engaged in beating your wife.

    See how fun that is?

Comment by Texas Rainmaker — 8:53 am

  17. Now - you are simply lying. And incoherently to. I had no supposition. Only a semi-loaded question. Oh well. Live with yourself.

Comment by djernigan — 9:02 am

  18. Hey, work hard and someday you might be successful.

Jerkagain…hard work and success? Dude, that’s just crazy talk!

  19. “Well, the first step is admitting your problem. Good job, endo, now you can proceed to step 2, recognizing you need help.”

Very funny. Then I guess it’s true that Republicans can’t tell the difference between political dissent and violent terrorism. And are you saying that 66% of Americans are Democrats? Sounds promising for the next election…

Friendly advice - if you’re going to recommend locking up a whole section of the population, stick to the old Republican guideline: make sure it’s a minority.

  20. Daniel,

YOU believe the American Military sancitons “rape rooms”?!!!!!

No they don’t. For example the soldiers involved in the Abu Graib Photo Abuses are all serving Prison Time.

Did you know all those photos were taken in one night during a Night Shift?
The Mudville Gazette did a factually based analysis of the Abu Graib scandal:
