For while you used to have a number of dissenters - to keep the debate in your comments pages lively and interesting - I see that they have basically all left you, so that now all that remains is the choir.

This post is a good example of the ill-informed and hysteric level of dialogue you have recently engaged in - and perfectly representative of why everyone has left.

In fact - you state a simple untruth. Al Sharpton has not asked that the Jena 6 go unpunished - but simply argued that the punishment does not fit the crime – and that it is particularly unjust given that it is out of proportion to how whites are charged for similar offences.

Now – I don’t mean to suggest here that Al Sharpton’s point isn’t debatable – but, rather, to simply suggest that when you misrepresent his position, you inhibit the very debate that you pretend to be engaged in raising for analysis.

Also notable is your reaction to Ahmadinejad’s visit to Columbia University. At first – you are all prepared to take him and other perceived liberals to task for inviting him; then, when he has the nerve to defy expectation, without so much as an admission of your mistake, you begin to spin, spin, spin in another direction. I mean really? So liberals are to be faulted for not throwing pies at him – as they did with Ann Coulter? First of all – do you have any idea what kind of security detail Ahmadinejad had in the U.S.?

And second – a few kids caught up in an anti-free speech prank is so poorly representative of democratic ideals that your parallel appears very nearly random.

So – anyway – I hope you are still enjoying yourself with this blog. I particularly enjoy the fact that my help is no longer needed, as you have very nearly slipped into self-parody – what with your rabidly uncritical defense of an increasingly unpopular president – engaged in an increasingly unpopular war, and this even while numerous other of your GOP cohorts (notably, George Will – but numerous others as well) have gone on record to condemn Bush’s foray’s into the middle east as incompetent at best and criminal at worst. You have suddenly become so. . . old fashioned. . . or is it . . . out of date.
